'That Man Is an Angel': Superman Actor David Corenswet Praised by Co-Star (2025)

Isabela Merced believes that David Corenswet is perfect as Superman, calling him an "angel" given how the actor has approached his work on the DCU project with grace and patience. Merced stars as Hawkgirl alongside Corenswet's Big Blue Boy Scout in the upcoming James Gunn Superman movie, scheduled to arrive in July 2025.

Merced was promoting her upcoming Alien: Romulus film at San Diego Comic-Con, where she opened to Screen Rant about why she felt Corenswet was perfectly cast as the Last Son of Krypton. "That man is an angel," she said. "He is very much Superman. He very much has that energy, and I admire working with him. His patience is incredible with his little tight suit on those hot days! I mean, he never complained once."

Merced compared her experience working with the Corenswet to the one with Alien: Romulus' lead actor Cailee Spaeny, praising the pair's work ethic. "I've been very lucky to work with people like him and Cailee whose professionalism is just so inspiring," she said. "You just go, 'I can't complain about s--t.' They're doing so much more work and have so much pressure on their backs, yet they handle it with such ease. That was really cool to watch."

Merced is not the only one who holds Corenswet in high esteem. Ti West, the actor's director for the movie Pearl, recently revealed he strongly recommended Corenswet for the DCU role, believing it was excellent casting. "He does kind of look like Superman, so that seemed sensible to me," West said. "But we just had a great conversation. We’re from a similar part of the world, and we got along, and he understood the kind of movie [I wanted to make]. I think he said his favorite movie was Singin’ in the Rain, and when we were going to make Pearl, he understood the kind of golden age of Hollywood thing that he was coming into as a performer."

Corenswet also has a small role in this summer's blockbuster disaster movie Twisters. The film's director Lee Isaac Chung believes the actor will bring an aura of purity to Superman. "David was going out for that role when we were filming. I remember we were secretly rooting for him," he said. "When we found out he was on a shortlist, we said, 'You know, he actually would be a great Superman.' He is such an imposing and big presence. There's this genuine purity to him that I feel fits in a lot with Superman."

Merced, who will portray the Kendra Saunders incarnation of Hawkgirl, had a lot of fun playing the character. The self-professed nerd revealed in another recent interview that she geeks out whenever she dons the Hawkgirl costume. "Honestly, inside I'm just a nerdy guy. I feel like that's who I actually am. I'm geeking out every time I try on the supersuit! It's just the coolest thing in the world to me," she said.

The DCU's Superman movie will hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
